Sunlight

Batik on muslin cloth, 56 x 40.5 cm

Someone once said to Nnyanzi that the titles he chooses for his artworks are as “poetic” as the pieces themselves. It’s hard to argue with that: if Nnyanzi set out to paint sunlight in this picture, he succeeded. The work reminds us that Nnyanzi is a batik artist of the very first order, even though he works with many other materials, and that, in his fusion of abstraction and realism, we get a visual landscape that approaches poetry and which is perfect in and of itself.
