Tindi made Arek II on commission from this collector after the artist presented a solo show with Xenson Art Space in 2023. The show, titled Shadow of the Dinka, purported to describe the complex personalities of the Dinka people of South Sudan. The figures he painted (and dressed up with fabric) were followed by their shadows, an interesting concept. Many of the pieces were extremely colorful, with Tindi dressing some of his characters in outrageously bright hues. Arek, one of the pieces exhibited, stood out for its rather dark palette, but it was indicated as sold, and so this collector asked Tindi to make another version of Arek.
