Lamp on a Bench II

Ronex, an established artist in Uganda, made this collage on commission after a slightly bigger (and different) version of the picture was published in The Weganda Review, which this collector founded and edits. For years, before electricity became more widely available in Uganda, the hurricane lamp was the only source of light in many homes, so Ronex’s interesting placement of the lamp on a bare bench can have a poignant effect on the discerning viewer. It’s a beautiful painting whether seen in bright conditions or the half-light of a corridor, and the minimalist composition is unlike most of Ronex’s pictures.
