This gem of a painting describes the work of scavengers looking for plastic waste and other garbage they could sell to recyclers. These garbage dealers live on the margins of society, almost like spectral forces, and Kateregga’s hesitant but confident brushwork succeeds in capturing this aspect of their lives. There are very few Ugandan artists making pictures at Kateregga’s pitch, one reason there is a lot of interest in his work. As an artist, and as a man, Kateregga is a great ambassador for authentic Ugandan art, albeit one who has remained humble despite his immense success.
