This piece was acquired directly from Waddimba, who is active in Fort Portal as a painter, sculptor and designer of buildings. Waddimba is distinguished by his association with Fabian Mpagi, a great Ugandan artist who died in 2010. Waddimba for years was apprenticed to Mpagi at Uganda’s Nommo Gallery, so that the master’s influence is clear in this and other pieces by Waddimba. There is myth, mystery and the distinct reality of a woman at work, all of it described with the “spiritual abstraction” for which Mpagi was famous. Waddimba today is a master in his own right, Mpagi’s true heir in his handling of light and colour.
