The Charcoal Vendor (Akatale)

This ceramic sculpture was inspired by the feminine beauty of the quintessential market woman, like the buxom mama bearing a load of charcoal. “She does not rise dramatically,” the artist wrote (somewhat ironically) of her work. “This piece celebrates resilience, belonging and continuity.” The piece is one of a kind in its evocation of the market mama’s struggle to look after herself and her family, the dark cavity at the top somehow managing to express the emptiness that can provoke determination.
