Get Me Out of Here

Lubega and two others executed this piece after being commissioned by the collector, who wanted a sculpture so minimalist in its evocation of liberty: the ability, simply put, to break out and do what one wants to do. Lubega is a skilled craftsman who has experimented widely with all types of local wood, and he decided that the soft but compact wood of the musambya tree would be perfect for the base, which he sculpted for many days. Others worked on the metallic top. The result, a piece that unexpectedly resembles an open padlock, is among the wonders of the Roduza Collection.
