This piece was acquired directly from Kanuge, a master printmaker who is among the greatest Ugandan artists you have never heard of. He has taught printmaking for years at Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts. He has been a mentor to the next generation of printmakers, from Paul Ssendagire to Robert Yiga. Very few prints of ‘The Beginning of the Future’ were ever made, with one going into the art collection of the World Bank, and Kanuge’s work has also been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist said the piece was inspired by the sight of his daughter, now a grown woman, putting on his sandals all those years ago. It is a career-defining piece for Kanuge: so ambiguous, so suspenseful, so poetic, so thought-provoking, so beautiful. It is a major highlight of the Roduza Collection.
