Ready to Go

This wonderful piece was acquired directly from Kanuge, a master printmaker who is among the greatest Ugandan artists you have never heard of. He has taught printmaking for years at Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts. He has been a mentor to the next generation of printmakers, from Paul Ssendagire to Robert Yiga, and Kanuge’s work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This piece depicts a woman from the Banyankore people on the day she is to be “given away,” as they say, to the man who will marry her. Her facial expression is innocent if slightly coquettish, and in the end we glimpse enough of her to know that she is so beautiful. Que beleza!
