Lutengano “Lute” Mwakisopile has distinguished himself as a vivid and powerful painter of ordinary life in Tanzania, where he has been acclaimed for many years. He was one of four artists who represented Tanzania at the 2024 Venice Biennale, an event that helped expose Lute to a wider audience of collectors. This particular Lute shows the artist’s ability to describe mass: the picture’s centre of gravity is the voucher seller’s voluminous buttocks, which bulge almost like balloons. But one suspects that Lute was faithful to the facts, because he is capturing the voucher seller’s distinct reality.
