Mwangi has been established for years as one of East Africa’s leading lights, a painter who has created a visual language all his own. This piece was executed two decades ago for exhibition at the former Tulifanya Gallery in Kampala, where Mwangi was among gallerist Maria Fischer’s favorites. Nairobi’s Circle Art Agency, which has offered Mwangi’s work for auction multiple times, says the “playful, whimsical character of Mwangi’s colors, animals and symbols creates a lightness which belies the incredible sophistication of his clean, curved lines, color relationships and structural coherence.”
