Spire, as he is best known, is a renaissance man in Kampala who wears many hats: public intellectual, cartoonist, teacher, political activist, and so much else. The best of his editorial cartoons rise to the level of fine art, in the sense that they seek to educate or create awareness of what is at stake in the politics of Ugandan society. No painting could ever describe Musevenism as compellingly as this piece that shows the absurdity of obsession within Uganda’s ruling party with the long-time president. Spire puts everything into Yoweri Museveni’s floppy hat, and before our eyes it becomes the very fragile house Museveni built.
