All in the Mind (Buffalo Woman series)

This painting, acquired directly from Mzili, is from his Buffalo Woman series, inarguably the body of work that really earned Mzili his reputation as one of the region’s most enterprising artists. The painting is very much an example of Mzili’s “Indigenous Expressionism,” a term he coined for his work. With Buffalo Woman, a solo show he staged with Afriart Gallery in 2010, Mzili aimed to describe the resilience of women, but there is a wonderfully mischievous streak in the imagery of the woman, now bearing horns, for whom everything is “in the mind.”
