Enjoy the Party I

Mzili, one of Uganda’s masters, executed this rare painting in 2006, provoked by Uganda’s first multiparty elections in two decades. The charming composition belies the embedded political tension of the time, as Kizza Besigye of the ‘blue’ FDC party challenged President Yoweri Museveni of the ‘yellow’ NRM party in the election that Besigye’s followers believe he won. The painting is very much an example of Mzili’s “Indigenous Expressionism,” a term he coined for his work.
