Fruit Vendors of Kalerwe

Kyeyune’s depiction of a Kampala market scene was first exhibited at Makerere University, then again during a group show pairing masters and apprentices at Entebbe’s Seyna Art Gallery. This is Kyeyune at his best: like a literary novelist, he magnifies a unique scene of everyday life in an urban setting, giving us a window into the intrigue that sustains such places. It’s a minor miracle that he’s able to squeeze all those details into a small piece of canvas and, while doing so, still be able to unify the picture. The painting, a feast of color, has been hanging in the collector’s dining room since he acquired it directly from the artist.
