Jackfruit

The collector commissioned Yiga to execute this piece with larger dimensions, after the artist ran out of prints from the original output. The work shows Yiga’s brilliance as a colorist, and in the end the piece is greater than the sum of its parts: the work assumes abstraction to those who don’t know what a jackfruit-laden tree looks like. Yiga is one of three masterful printmakers at work in Uganda today. His personal story is just as compelling; he paid for his own education through high school and at Makerere University, where he attended the art school and was trained by the great John Bosco Kanuge. Yiga was later apprenticed to Paul Ssendagire, whose work is also in the Roduza Collection.
