The third instalment in Ocom’s monumental ‘washing’ studies, this is the portrait of Jasmine, a woman Ocom had painted many times before she agreed to be his model for this project. More than simply a semi-nude, in Ocom’s gifted hands the painting acquires a whole life of its own. Jasmine’s physical and spiritual worlds reach synthesis in the pose that most Ugandan women will relate to. One wonders, looking at her face as well as her feet, what her day has been like and what tomorrow holds for her. Ocom, the outstanding Ugandan artist of his generation, said himself that this painting was one of the great achievements of his career and that he regretted having to give it up.
