This piece was acquired directly from Kanuge, a master printmaker who is among the greatest Ugandan artists you have never heard of. He has taught printmaking for years at Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts. He has been a mentor to the next generation of printmakers, from Paul Ssendagire to Robert Yiga, and Kanuge’s work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This piece, one of several Kanuges in the Roduza Collection, describes the work of traveling troubadours of the kind who used to move across villages entertaining people for small gifts or blessings.
