Minimum Portrait

The Sudanese artist Waleed Mohammed has executed several “minimum family portraits” in the style of this painting – passport photo-like pictures that are haunting in their evocation of the complex face of Sudan, a country being destroyed by civil war. This piece, with the violent fragmentation across the girl’s blurred face, is among the most striking in Waleed’s body of recent work. The artist was in residence at the 32 Degrees East art centre in Kampala in 2025.
