This sculpture is a reminder of the excellence of artisans and other self-taught artists many of us have never even heard of. Like “African Beauty,” another sculpture by Wasswa in this collection, “Mother and Child” is simply the work of a master. The sculptor carves the love – and intimacy – between mother and child in terms that emphasize the distinct African reality in the maternal bond. It is no small feat to adumbrate the individual parts of this relationship with as much simplicity as elegance.
