Mother Nature (Portrait of a Ugandan Woman)

Kyeyune, who is arguably Uganda’s greatest living artist, made this painting after a seeing a woman somewhere in Kampala, but the finished work is not realistic. With his palette knife Kyeyune succeeds in giving the woman the powerful forlorn gaze that makes one think forever of what she was thinking that day, and in depicting the woman’s décolletage as though it is the thing that will remain if and when she loses everything else. The painting is classic Kyeyune, who is able to paint as though he is digging through the canvas. The result: a masterpiece of Expressionism and one of the undisputed treasures of the Roduza Collection.
