This piece is an exemplary work in the expansive oeuvre of Nuwa Wamala Nnyanzi, a great Ugandan artist. Batik art is what Nnyanzi is best known for – and here’s a piece that shines with his conceptual brilliance. The work depicts the physical instruments of power in Buganda Kingdom, which he once served as a security minister. Truly unforgettable, looking at this picture, are the abstract shapes of the man in his kanzu and the woman in her gomesi as they protect the drums, their figures vaguely united by the shield between them.
