Solitary Fish

This exquisite piece, depicting a fish in water, captures the solitariness of life as Geoffrey Mukasa knew it. The most acclaimed Ugandan painter of the 20th century was often lonely himself, spending much of his time working over canvases at his home on the shores of Lake Victoria. The collector considers himself lucky to own this piece, acquired directly from a gallery in Kampala that holds a small batch of the last Mukasas offered by his estate. It is not the artist’s most extravagant creation, but it has the narrative force and quality to match anything Mukasa ever made.
