Ssebo (Besigye), 2001 to 2011

Executed over a decade and completed in 2011, Ssebo ranks among Nabulime’s major works. This monumental piece is one of the undisputed masterpieces of our time, one that belongs in a national museum. At first the work seems grotesque, but looks are deceiving and context is key. It is Nabulime’s geometric interpretation of the travails of the Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, a key figure in local politics since the turn of the century. A piece that fascinates with every encounter, Ssebo reminds us of the strength and fragility of human existence.
