Uganda’s greatest artist of the 20th century executed this multimedia collage in 1989, when there was still a shortage of artistic materials like canvas and paints. Mukasa’s figurative work is widely sought after by collectors, but his still life collages rank among his most exemplary pieces. The artist appears to have repeatedly found clarity in still life. The still lifes are often colorful and whimsical in their evocation of domestic harmony (and disharmony too), and in some poignant way they underscore the inner solitude that Mukasa sought in difficult times. This piece, one of the wonders of the Roduza Collection, was acquired directly from the Mukasa estate via AKA Gallery in Kampala.
