This piece was acquired directly from Kanuge, a master printmaker who is among the greatest Ugandan artists you have never heard of. He has taught printmaking for years at Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts. He has been a mentor to the next generation of printmakers, from Paul Ssendagire to Robert Yiga. Kanuge’s work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A small number of ‘Tempo of Life’ prints were made, most of them privately collected by European and American travelers. The piece was clearly provoked by the movement of feet during tribal dance, and Kanuge brings a conceptual sensibility by revealing not too much.
