This is a masterpiece by Kanuge, who appears to abstract the head of the crested crane, Uganda’s national bird, in striking imagery that provokes questions about how the artist is able to capture such details in what is a very difficult medium. But Kanuge is nothing if not a master, and he has trained the next generation of printmakers – from Paul Ssendagire to Robert Yiga. This piece was acquired from Henry Mzili Mujunga, who was once Kanuge’s student at Makerere University.
