The Trumpeter

Nakitende executed this whimsical depiction of a trumpeter on commission from the collector in 2023. It is made in the artist’s unique style of abstraction using locally sourced materials. She takes barkcloth, known among her Baganda people as lubugo, and ‘deconstructs’ it into textured paper, onto which she applies her ideas in forms that appear to shift when viewed from different angles. Stitching, burning and weaving raffia onto barkcloth paper, she is able to achieve layers of beauty while telling rich stories.
