This beautiful piece was presented to Muhumuza when he went to have coffee and food at the Baobab House, a wonderful artistic oasis in the South Sudanese capital of Juba, by Abul Oyay, the place’s artistic director. Abul said she acquired the item from a local craftswoman. She had no more details. Deng Chol, another South Sudanese artist, later identified this winnowing basket as coming from the Anuak ethnic community of South Sudan. The piece is yet another example of fine craftsmanship by locals whose names we don’t know.
