Matovu is a legendary artist who has been active, at home and abroad, since the 1970s after graduating from the Makerere University art school. He taught art in South Africa, notably at the former Thaba Nchu College of Education, and also at Machakos Teachers College in Kenya. In Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, his work used to be exhibited at the famous Watatu Gallery. He is best known as a printmaker of the first order, as this piece reliably shows, and much of his imagery is influenced by the solitary experience of life in exile.
